Chiropractic and Weight Loss

Chiropractic and Weight Loss

Over the years I have had many overweight chiropractic patients under my care. The overweight phenomenon has always been of interest to me.

Many of my patients, like myself, enjoy both feeling and looking fit. As soon as we notice a slight gain in weight we add exercise time, modify our diets and get it under control.

Others don’t seem to really get that desire to control their weight until the task seems insurmountable. I have treated patients over the years who let their weight balloon up 50 to 100 pounds or sometimes more before they commit to take action against their weight problems.

I have had many of my overweight patients site lower back pain and back and neck pain in general as the cause behind their weight gain. While I know that these circumstances exist, until this past week I did not have personal experience with a situation like this. This past Monday, I awoke with a knot between my shoulder blades that caused neck pain, limitations in my neck’s range of motion, middle back pain with any level of physical exertion or stretching. Outside of the physical demands of my work, I took the day off from ordinary exercise regimen. Normally, I start my Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays with several hundred sit-ups – both on the floor and on a Swiss Ball followed by 30 minutes of various exercises on my Total Gym as well as several sets of push-ups and pull-ups.

I am not immune to neck or back pain but I have never had pain that totally prevented me from all of my exercises. Granted, sometimes I have to limit the type or intensity of the exercise, but this time it was everything – for the whole week.

I guess my back pain episode this confirmed with personal experience what I have heard many times over the years from my overweight patients who don’t exercise due to pain. I can easily see how repeatedly missing exercise opportunities due to back pain can lead to excessive and difficult to control weight gain.

If you are overweight and not exercising because of back pain do yourself a favor and get treatment for you back. Unchecked weight gain will only place more stress on your back resulting in more back pain and disability.
